Website Design - Where to Start

Many new web designers don't have a standard process when creating a new website and although the end result may still look good, the journey is inefficient. The first steps we'll discuss here are choosing a working canvas size and the dimensions of the website.

I use Photoshop to design my websites, and I begin by creating a new canvas of 1600px wide by 1000px high. You can reduce the dimensions to around 1200px x 850px if you prefer.

Why such a large canvas? We may not use the entire space but it's good to have it available. If you're using a background image that has a gradient drop-off, the gradient needs to have sufficient area to reach a constant color before reaching the end of your canvas otherwise you'll it will clip your background image.  I'm a fan of websites with big backgrounds as it shows the designers have taken the time to put detail into a background image that only some of us will see.

As a new web designer, it can be overwhelming designing an entire website if you've never done it before. I therefore recommend breaking the process into more manageable chunks and gaining some experience and confidence in designing each component before putting it all together.  I suggest taking a screenshot of an existing website that you like - something not too fancy, and trying to create a similar design. Notice how the website is broken into a header, body and footer and aim to replicate these sections.  Repeat this process for a few websites and then take the header from one website, mix it with the footer from another website, and you'll get a feel for what works and what doesn't in your web design.
